The U.S. Census Bureau's website now provides the latest poverty estimates for each of the nation’s almost 14,000 Title I-eligible school districts.   The data are available for 1995, 1997, and each year from 1999 through 2005.

The information includes:

  • total population,
  • children ages 5 - 17, and
  • related children ages 5 - 17 in families in poverty.

Data are also available by county and by state.

The news release notes that the estimates are produced in order for the US Department of Education to implement provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.   The school district data are provided as part of the Census Bureau's Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates.  These estimates are the only source of income and poverty data for counties and poverty statistics for school districts with populations of less than 65,000.

Data for New York State's school districts for 2005 can be selected here.
