This weekend's New York Times Real Estate section (Jan. 30, 2011) includes an article about the Long Island Index's latest report, "Getting It Done: Aligning Long Island’s Development Processes with Sustainable Economic Growth". The article -- Addressing the Issue of Home Affordability -- focuses on the Index's effort to highlight the region's high housing costs and lack of vibrant, livable downtowns, and how that hinders the region's economy and quality of life.
The CUNY Mapping Service provides maps and spatial analysis for the Long Island Index, through the generous support of the Rauch Foundation. We were glad to see one of our maps included as a sidebar graphic with the Times story, reproduced verbatim. The map shows the changing patterns of housing affordability across Nassau and Suffolk counties. The map is shown at right, and you can access it directly at the Times website.
The Long Island Index report along with accompanying data and charts is available here. The newly updated Index website gives you easy access to a wealth of information about many issues confronting Long Island, and how you can help address them.
Our Mapping Service also provides an interactive, online map to help you visualize challenges to the region, or just to find out more about your local community's demographics, land use patterns, transportation access, and more.
